Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 9 — Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen confirmed that AstraZeneca vaccine will be used as booster shot for the frontline workers, for the vaccine is limited.

The premier addressed in a voice message shared on social media on Monday.

Prime minister's statement is made in response to those who received AstraZeneca as the first and second doses and they requested AstraZeneca for the third dose.

"We need a thorough study on the gap between the first, second and third dose for those who receive AstraZeneca. Plus, we do not have sufficient AstraZeneca for everyone,” the premier said.

The AstraZeneca vaccines will be used as a booster shot to approximately 500,000 to 1 million frontline workers like doctors, armed forces and relevant officials fulfilling duties at the provinces along Khmer-Thai border.

The booster shot is to further increase the amount of COVID19 antibodies produced by the immune system in light of the spread of Delta variant. World Health Organisation said vaccines can indeed provide protection against COVID19, including the Delta.

As of 8 August, Cambodia has detected 385 cases of Delta variant.
