Phnom Penh (FN), Sep. 23 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said he wanted to see good cooperation on human rights issues in Cambodia, not a blame game.
The premier met with the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia professor Vitit Muntarbhorn via video conference on 22 September 2021.
Personal secretary to the premier Eang Sophallet said Vitit asked Samdech Hun Sen on four issues, including Cambodia's priorities on human rights, measures to curb COVID19 in prison, expansion of economic civil society and political space, and what the envoy should do to support Cambodia on human rights issues.
In response, the premier underlined that Cambodia prioritizes the right to life and in order to maintain this right to life, Cambodia must maintain peace and social stability, along with vaccinating people to fight against COVID19.
Regarding COVID19 cases in prison, the premier stated that Cambodia relocated female and pregnant inmates to a new place to avoid COVID19 infection. In addition, Cambodia has already vaccinated them with two doses of vaccine and is ready to give a third dose.
For the expansion of socio-economic, civil society and political space, premier Hun Sen said Cambodia wants to see a good social, economic and politically democratic environment.
Meanwhile, the premier wanted to build good cooperation with the special rapporteur through mutual trust and constructive feedbacks on human rights issues, not a blame game.
Eang Sophallet added that during the meeting, Vitit highly commended the Royal Government of Cambodia for taking timely action in vaccinating Cambodian people to fight against COVID19.
