Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 27 – Cambodia prime minister Hun Sen has called for continued strengthening and expanding of ASEAN-United States partnership and cooperation in all sectors (especially health, digital, transport, energy, and environment and climate change) and in strengthening and promoting the role of women, on the basis of mutual respect for sovereignty and mutual assistance to build a bright and prosperous common future.

The premier delivered remarks at ASEAN-United States Summit 2021, held Monday via videoconference.

"ASEAN-United States Partnership has been significantly contributing to promoting economic, trade and investment cooperation between the ASEAN and the United States,” he underlined.

In the context that ASEAN as well as the whole world should revitalize and boost economic growth, Cambodia supported the launch of the ASEAN-United States Statement on Digital Development and the effective implementation of the Plan of Action to promote the ASEAN-United States Strategic Partnership 2021-2025.

Cambodia also encouraged the United States-ASEAN Business Council (U.S.-ABC) to work closely with ASEAN member states to increase trade activities and investment flows in the ASEAN region, especially by promoting the implementation of the ASEAN-United States Trade and Investment Facilitation Agreement (ASEAN-U.S. TIFA). At the same time, Cambodia would like to ask the United States to continue to support ASEAN’s efforts to revitalize and boost socio-economic growth, particularly through the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework.

On behalf of the people and the Royal Government of Cambodia, premier Hun Sen expressed deep gratitude to the United States for donating COVID19 vaccines, medical equipment and grant aid to Cambodia.

“I would also like to ask the United States to continue to provide necessary supports to ASEAN in the fight against COVID19,” the premier stated.
