Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 8 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said that as land prices skyrocketed, some high-ranking officials of the Sangkum Reastr Niyum government illegally took the state-owned land as their personal properties.

The premier spoke at the inauguration of the office building of the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction on Monday.

During the Sangkum Reastr Niyum ruled by king father Sihanouk, the country was so developed that officials and civil servants in Phnom Penh requested land for private ownership, thus corruption took place, causing land disputes between the government and the people.

“These officials, such as In Tam, Heu Lai In, Cheng Heng, Sirik Matak, all have rubber plantations and hundreds of hectares of land,” the premier recalled.

Samdech further stated that the dirty works of these officials brought many problems for the Sangkum Reastr Niyum government and the king.

The premier underlined that the land dispute cases have occurred decades ago, not just during the premier’s mandates, especially when a country enjoys peace.
