Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 10 – Cambodian king Norodom Sihamoni departed from Phnom Penh to Paris, France to attend the 41st General Conference of UNESCO in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of UNESCO, held on 10-14 November.

“On 12 November 2021, in the presence of numerous Heads of State and Government, king Sihamoni will deliver a royal speech at the official Opening Ceremony of the General Conference which centers on the crucial achievements of UNESCO in Cambodia,” according to a press release seen by Fresh News on 7 November 2021.

“Since its establishment in 1945, UNESCO has significantly contributed, through its programmes of multilateral cooperation, to the promotion of education, science, culture and communication in the world.”

Cambodia joined UNESCO on 3 July 1951. Due to the internal political situation, all UNESCO operations within the country were suspended in 1975. The UNESCO Office Phnom Penh reopened in 1991.

The kingdom has rich cultural heritage with three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Angkor Archeological Park, the Temple of Preah Vihear, and the Temple Zone of Sambor Prei Kuk.

Cambodian masked dance-theater, Chapey Dang Veng, tug-of-war game, Royal Ballet, and Sbek Thom or Khmer Shadow Puppetry have been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
