Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 29 – Journalists shall write good leads in their newswriting in order to attract more readers, president of Fresh News Training Center (FTC) Mar Yarith spoke at FTC’s training on 27 November 2021.

Yarith encouraged journalists to use “Direct Lead” to write Hot News or Spot News. Direct Lead consists of various writing methods, including Summary Lead, which quickly summarizes and covers all elements of the 5Ws, and Single item Lead, which only use one or two elements of a summary lead for a bigger punch.

He added that there are many other ways to write Direct Lead in Spot News, but most of the time, Summary Lead and Single item Lead are the most commonly used types. In addition, journalists frequently used Delayed Lead to write a long feature story.

Mar Yarith is a local veteran journalist, who has been working in the field of journalism for over 30 years. He has worked for various well-known foreign news agencies such as UPI, AP and VOA.

Yarith was also the founder and co-founder to several media outlets in Cambodia. Back then, he was the only Cambodian student majoring in journalism at the University of Michigan and the University of Maryland in the United States.
