Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 21 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen and president of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam Nguyen Xuan Phuc expressed satisfactions on the development of the comprehensive and close relations between the two countries.

The two leaders' statement was made during a courtesy call at the Peace Palace on Tuesday.

"Both sides expressed satisfaction with the development of the comprehensive bilateral relations and close cooperation between Cambodia and Viet Nam for 55 years despite COVID19 pandemic," according to Cambodian premier's personal secretary Eang Sophalleth.

Vietnamese president praised the historical achievement of Cambodia in national development, political and social stability, and the roles Cambodia play in both region and international arena.

Cambodia and Vietnam have established diplomat ties since 24 June 1967, but was ended in March 1970. In January 1979 after Cambodia was liberated from the Khmer Rouge Regime, both sides decided to restore the relations. In March 2005, the relations were upgraded to good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-lasting peace and stability between the two countries for the mutual benefits of the two peoples.

Through this good relationship, the leaders often exchanged official visits. Cambodia and Viet Nam have always supported each other on various difficult times, in particular during the COVID19 crisis.

Cambodia-Viet Nam bilateral trade reached more than USD 5 billion in 2020 and approximately USD 7 billion in the first eight months of 2021.

From 1994 to 2021, Vietnamese's FDI inflow to Cambodia was 88 projects, worth approximately USD 2.56 billion. Vietnamese FDI inflow to Cambodia was worth approximately USD 89.4 million in the first 10 months of 2021.

Both sides agreed to strengthen the bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, trade and investment and agreed to promote the implementation of the investment promotion and protection agreements to avoid double taxation and facilitate trade development.

The two countries also agreed to expedite the signing of a border trade agreement, and speed up talks towards mutual recognition on passports and vaccination certificates to ease travel restriction. Both parties agreed to further strengthen cooperation in the fields of defence, health, education and justice to promote people-to-people ties as well as regional and international cooperation.

Cambodian premier thanked Vietnamese president for supporting and assisting the kingdom in hosting a successful 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM13).
