Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 17 – ASEAN secretary general Dato Lim Jock Hoi supported Cambodia in initiating a "Troika" mechanism to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire in Myanmar, and announced to convene meetings to mobilize humanitarian aid to assist Myanmar.

ASEAN secretary general Lim Jock Hoi informed Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen during a working meeting at the Peace Palace on Monday.

According to delegate minister Kao Kim Hourn, the premier also highlighted his recent visit to Myanmar, which adheres to ASEAN Charter and the 5-point consensus only in order to contribute to ending violence and providing humanitarian aids to the people of Myanmar without discrimination.

Samdech also highlighted his initiative to push this mission forward through providing assistance to Myanmar based on the "Troika" mechanism and the humanitarian assistance mechanism in critical situations, Kao Kim Hourn added.

"Premier Hun Sen highlighted the ASEAN’s Troika mechanism, which include the current rotating ASEAN chair Cambodia, the previous ASEAN chair Brunei and the next rotating ASEAN chair Indonesia, plus the ASEAN secretary general to work together to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire in Myanmar. In particular, evaluate the progress of the ASEAN’s 5-point consensus, which was agreed at the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on 24 April 2021,” Kim Hourn added.

In this regard, the ASEAN secretary general fully supports Cambodia's initiative to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire in Myanmar.

On the occasion, Lim Jock Hoi also informed premier Hun Sen that in August 2021, the ASEAN Secretariat convened a meeting to mobilize humanitarian aid to Myanmar and handed the relief to Myanmar for the first time in October 2021.

During the working meeting, Samdech Hun Sen also requested the ASEAN secretary general to organize a new meeting to mobilize aid to Myanmar. Samdech also reiterated Japan's readiness, through Japanese ambassador to Cambodia, to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar.

During Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen’s recent visit, Myanmar’s senior general Min Aung Hlaing informed Cambodian premier Hun Sen that the Myanmar government had declared a five-month ceasefire with all Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) until the end of February 2022 and decided to further extend it until end of 2022. He assured the facilitation of the visit of the special envoy to Myanmar and to meet with all parties concerned including EAOs taking into account of the prevailing situation in Myanmar.
