Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 28 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen has requested Timor-Leste to purchase rice from Cambodia, speaking in a courtesy call by Timorese foreign minister Adaljiza Albertina Xavier Reis Magno on Friday at the Peace Palace.

According to the premier’s personal secretary Eang Sophalleth, the premier requested Timor-Leste to consider importing rice from Cambodia, adding that Timorese investors can invest in the kingdom's rice mills, rice warehouses and infrastructure for rice exports in order to stabilise rice supply from the kingdom to Timor-Leste.

Eang Sophalleth added that the premier also asked Timor-Leste to consider South-south Cooperation, in particular Free Trade Agreements (FTA) and Double Taxation Agreements between the two countries.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture’s report, Cambodia earned more than USD 527 million from rice exports in 2021, a decrease of nearly 11 percent compared to the same period in 2020.
