Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 22 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen reacted to some extremist analysts for claiming that Sihanoukville deep-sea port could become China’s debt trap like Sri Lanka port.

The premier spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Japan-aided sewage treatment plant in Phnom Penh on Tuesday (22 Feb).

Sihanoukville deep-sea port received loans and assistances from Japan, not China. Japan also bought some shares of the port. Please do not misunderstand and stop comparing Cambodia’s case to Sir Lanka’s case, the premier appealed to those analysts.

The premier added that those extremist analysts shall better understand their own country.

Developing Sihanoukville deep-sea port to a larger port will provide easier transportation and reduce transportation costs in the future. The construction of the 200-million-dollar Sihanoukville Autonomous Port Terminal will kick off in 2022 and complete in early 2025.

The newly-developed deep-sea port will allow ships containing over 4,000 containers to dock. Sihanoukville port will be able to accommodate approximately 93 percent of the ships in Asia, and it will offer lower shipping costs compared to today.
