Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 20 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen and Japanese prime minister Kishida Fumio shared the view that digital has potential to elevate the bilateral relationship to further height and the importance of enhancing the cooperation in digital, according to a joint statement seen by Fresh News on Sunday.

“The two prime ministers shared the recognition that the development of a central bank settlement system, Bakong, which is supported by a Japanese company, is an innovative effort leading in the region and the world, and the importance of supporting this kind of effort.”

Premier Hun Sen also highly appreciated the fact that Japan is contributing to the realization of smart cities in Cambodia and the two prime ministers consented to cooperate toward further realization in this field, the statement added.

"We [Cambodia-Japan] will start new cooperation in the fields of energy, security, digital economy and cyber. For example, the Bakong digital payment system of the National Bank of Cambodia was developed with a support from a Japanese company. Japan will continue to support this kind of efforts", premier Kishida Fumio spoke in a joint press conference on Sunday.
