Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 23 – In his capacity as ASEAN chair’s special envoy on Myanmar, Cambodian foreign minister Prak Sokhonn called on Myanmar's concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint in the use of military force to ease hostilities.

The special envoy spoke in the press conference on Wednesday (23 Mar) after concluding his three-day official visit to Myanmar.

"As both regional and international members expressed concern over the Myanmar's on-going violence and humanitarian crisis, I called on all concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint in the use of military force to ease hostilities. I also encouraged them to end violence and create a conducive environment for political dialogue to resolve this crisis," the minister said.

"As we call for the maximum restraint, Myanmar's senior general Min Aung Hlaing raised concerns about the continued violence from Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) and People's defense forces such as the smuggling of weapons, which have led to serious violence," Prak Sokhonn continued.

The first visit of the special envoy contributed to creating a favorable condition leading to the end of violence as well as the utmost restraint by all parties; distributing humanitarian assistance with the support and coordination from ASEC and AHA Centre; and encouraging the political consultations / dialogues among all parties concerned, according to the press release dated 18 March 2022.

During Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen’s visit in January 2022, Myanmar’s senior general Min Aung Hlaing informed Cambodian premier Hun Sen that the Myanmar government had declared a five-month ceasefire with all Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) until the end of February 2022 and decided to further extend it until end of 2022. He assured the facilitation of the visit of the special envoy to Myanmar and to meet with all parties concerned including EAOs taking into account of the prevailing situation in Myanmar.
