Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 23 – In his capacity as ASEAN chair’s special envoy on Myanmar, Cambodian foreign minister Prak Sokhonn dismissed criticism that his first visit to Myanmar recognizes the junta as the Myanmar's legitimate government.

The special envoy spoke in the press conference on his three-day official visit to Myanmar, held at Phnom Penh International Airport on Wednesday (23 Mar).

"To avoid misunderstanding, I would like to make it clear that my official visit to Myanmar was not aimed to recognize the legitimacy of Myanmar’s government. Cambodia just wants to help Myanmar's citizens to avoid the tragedy like Cambodia had experienced in the past," the minister underlined.

Prak Sokhonn added that during the visit, significant insights were gained to pave way for the ending of violence, the cooperation of various parties, as well as finding solution to deliver humanitarian aids to those in need.

Cambodia is willing to help and wants to meet with other concerned parties to help solve the Myanmar’s issues, but key actors of Myanmar are not yet ready to join this political process, Prak Sokhonn added.

Cambodian foreign minister Prak Sokhonn led a delegation to pay a working visit to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar on 21 March 2022 for a three-day working visit from 21-23 March 2022.

The first visit of the special envoy has contributed to creating a favorable condition leading to the end of violence as well as the utmost restraint by all parties; distributing humanitarian assistance with the support and coordination from ASEC and AHA Centre; and encouraging the political consultations/dialogues among all parties concerned.
