Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 20 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said that after two-year suspension of the Khmer New Year celebration, the Cambodian people are very happy to celebrate it this year and it seems like the people were just liberated from the genocidal Pol Pot regime on 7 January 1979, so as when Cambodia ended the war through a win-win policy in 1998.

The premier spoke at the inauguration ceremony of Phnom Penh Flood Protection and Drainage Improvement Phase IV on Wednesday.

"I think the happiness of people during Khmer New Year 2022 can compare to that during the liberation from the Pol Pot regime on 7 January 1979, and when we ended the kingdom’s war through win-win policy, which brings peace and unity. People are now very happy that they can celebrate the new year again after two-year suspension due to COVID19 outbreak,” the premier underlined.

The Royal Government’s regulations and preventive measures as well as people’s participation have allowed Cambodia to make this celebration possible, Samdech added.

"Now you know why Hun Sen did that in the past. It is to protect your life and bring you happiness,” the premier added.

Samdech also reminded that the New Year 2021 was a tough year for Cambodia as the COVID19 disease was very widespread and many deaths were reported, therefore the kingdom was on lockdown.

At the same time, premier Hun Sen callsed on people to continue to implement health safety measures and to get vaccinated in order to build a strong herd immunity.
