Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 25 – Cambodia considers lifting mask mandate in open public places, premier Hun Sen spoke at the handover ceremony of more than 1 million doses of COVID19 vaccine from Italy to Cambodia on Monday (25 Apr) at the Peace Palace, Phnom Penh.

“We should not only focus on the health issues, but also on socio-economic issues. Wearing mask [in public places] costs our people money,” the premier underlined.

Samdech continued, If Cambodian total population spends USD 100,000 per day to buy face mask, so it will be a total of USD 3 million in one month.

“As some countries already lifted mask mandatory, we can also implement the same thing. However, I need to wait for the meeting’s outcomes this evening, which will be chaired by Cambodian economy and finance minister Aun Pornmoniroth and health minister Mam Bunheng,” the premier continued.

"In my opinion, I want people to decide whether they want to wear mask or not when they are in open public places. However, indoor mask-wearing is still mandatory at the enclosed places such as the government buildings or air-conditioned offices,” the premier added.

On this occasion, Samdech also called on citizens to get at least three doses of vaccine, so that the students are also able to not wear mask and that will help reduce the expense of citizens.
