Phnom Penh (FN), May 17 – On 14 December 2008, an Iraqi journalist Muntazer al-Zaidi threw both of his shoes at the president of the United States George W. Bush during a press conference. Later, the journalist was sentenced to three years in jail and released after nine months of incarceration.

On 8 June 2021, a man named Damien Tarel was sentenced by a French court to four months in prison after he admitted slapping president Emmanuel Macron while he ran towards a crowd at the south-eastern town of France’s Tain-l'Hermitage.

Al Zaidi was convicted for attacking a visiting foreign president, while Tarel was convicted for assaulting a public official.

Recently, there has been a shoe-throwing incident happened on Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen, where he held an informal meeting with compatriots at the United States. A Cambodian-American Ouk Touch threw one of his shoes at the premier, but it was unsuccessful.

In this regard, shall the administration of US president Joe Biden take legal action against the ill-intended person who threw shoe at premier Hun Sen or throwing shoe is considered a freedom of expression?
