Phnom Penh (FN), May 18 – Indian prime minister Narendra Modi confirmed that the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway (IMT Highway) project will connect to Cambodia in the near future.  

His statement was made during a meeting with Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen on Wednesday via video conference.

In this meeting, premier Hun Sen said  that Cambodia emphasizes the importance of implementing the IMT Highway project and its expansion to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

On that occasion, Modi highlighted the IMT Highway and its possible expansion, adding that the project is in line with the master plan for connecting to ASEAN.

Modi added that India will provide a USD 1 billion loan to Cambodia for Mekong-Ganga cooperation.

Premier Hun Sen also expressed his deep gratitude for India’s assistance through the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Initiative on agriculture, environment, health, education, rural development, women's rights and culture, therefore, Samdech asked India to continue to support the proposal of the project to provide more benefits for Cambodia in the coming years.

The premier also praised India's contribution of USD 1 million to ASEAN in response to the COVID19 pandemic and encouraged India to continue to support Cambodia's national public health system, especially the capacity building of health professionals.
