Phnom Penh (FN), May 27 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen decided to classify the conservation land around Tonle Sap Lake in three zones, of which the second zone is a usufruct for citizens living there for more than 10 years.

The premier spoke in a special address on the Tonle Sap Lake on Friday (27 May).

The Royal Government of Cambodia classified the Tonle Sap Lake area into three zones as follows: zone 1 is the land that can be used for usufruct and ownership; zone 2 for usufruct only; and zone 3 for neither usufruct nor ownership.

On 28 November 2021, the premier ordered relevant authorities to crack down illegal logging and land encroachment surrounding the Tonle Sap Lake, especially in Kampong Chhnang province.

Immediately after the premier’s order, minister Chea Sophara set up a working group to conduct further study and inspect the flooded forest areas in the six provinces along the Tonle Sap Lake, including Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap and Kampong Thom. As a result, the governments took back the lands from ill-intended officials and sentenced them in accordance with the laws.
