Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 4 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen expressed his pride that Cambodia which was known for wars and massacres in the past now has become a democratic country that holds regular elections.

The premier spoke during a courtesy called by international observers on Saturday (Jun 4) at the Peace Palace.

According to the premier's personal secretary Eang Sophalleth, the president of the Centrist Democrat International (CDI) Andres Pastrana, on behalf of international observers, thanked premier Hun Sen and the Royal Government for allowing them to observe the upcoming communal elections. The CDI president hoped the election process will be conducted under a smooth, secure, orderly, fair and non-violent environment.

In response, premier Hun Sen welcomed the international observers and briefed about positive changes of Cambodian society, in particular from the bitter history of genocidal regime of Pol Pot to the rapid development under the roof of peace.

Samdech also reminded that after the fall of genocidal regime on 7 January 1979, the first time he came to the capital Phnom Penh, he had seen only 70. However, Phnom Penh nowadays is bustling and has numerous skyscrapers.

Samdech reminded that the United Nations used to send peacekeeping forces to Cambodia, but now Cambodia has been sending its peacekeepers forces to operate in other countries.

Premier Hun Sen thanked the international observers for their participations to observe communal elections. He also underlined the maturity of the democratic process in the kingdom.

During the 14 days of the electoral campaign, with the participation from the registered 17 political parties, zero incident and violence cases reported.

The premier also briefed about Cambodia’s effective control on COVID19 as there is no new case reported for nearly a month.
