Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 15 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen, as rotating chair of ASEAN, said he will initiate ASEAN’s joint bid to host FIFA World Cup in 2034 or 2038.

The premier spoke at the welcoming event of FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour to Cambodia, held on Wednesday (Jun 15) at the Peace Palace Phnom Penh.

"For the year 2022, as the chair of ASEAN, I would like to see ASEAN bidding for the host of the FIFA World Cup in 2034 or 2038. I will gather support from ASEAN heads of state and governments to push this initiative into reality,” the premier underlined.

Samdech continued, “ASEAN shall bid to host FIFA World Cup to further strengthen the values of economic, cultural, educational and sports cooperation in the ASEAN Community through engaging with global economic strength in order to fill ASEAN's shortcomings from the influential World Cup event.”

Asia has only hosted World Cup twice, in Korea-Japan in 2002 and in Doha, Qatar in 2022, the premier said.

As the kingdom gears up to host 2023 SEA Games-ASEAN Para Games, premier Hun Sen called on sport lovers worldwide to celebrate and support the kingdom as the host.
