Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 22 – The president of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), also a Maldivian foreign minister, Abdulla Shahid praised the wise leadership of Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen, who contributed to ending civil wars and achieving rapid development in the kingdom.

Abdulla paid a courtesy call on the premier on Monday morning (Aug 22) at the Peace Palace.

Abdulla lauded the premier for sending Cambodian peacekeepers to overseas at the request of the United Nations mission to maintain global peace.

“In the past, the United Nations used to send peacekeeping forces to Cambodia, but now Cambodia sends its peacekeepers forces under the UN framework to operate in other countries. This is a great success for Cambodia,” Abdulla underscored.

On this occasion, the UNGA’s president highly appreciated the wise leadership of premier Hun Sen in order to achieve his economic vision of a higher middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050. Abdulla also praised the leadership of the premier as the rotating chair of ASEAN 2022.
Regarding Cambodia-Maldives economic relations, Abdulla said that Cambodia-Maldives have potential for cooperation, in particular in trade sector. Cambodia can export agricultural products to Maldives.

Abdulla pledged to work with the Cambodian foreign minister Prak Sokhonn to push investors to review the investment opportunities in the kingdom in order to boost trade volume and foster economic cooperation.
For his part, premier Hun Sen briefed the favorable investment climate in Cambodia to Abdulla. Samdech said Cambodia allows foreigners to have 100 percent ownership when investing on agriculture sector.

Lastly, the premier urged Maldivian investors to invest in rice mills, rice warehouses, and directly purchase rice from Cambodia.
