Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 10 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said that Cambodia has put high priority on the development of coastal areas as the country’s second economic pole, especially Preah Sihanouk Province, which the RGC has set the goal of developing into “a multi-purpose special economic zone”.

The premier spoke at the 16th World Congress of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club, held on Saturday (Dec 10) at Sokha Beach Resort, Preah Sihanouk Province.

“Based on these favorable conditions, and under thorough, long-term and comprehensive visions, Cambodia has put high priority on the development of coastal areas as the country’s second economic pole, especially Preah Sihanouk Province, which the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) has set the goal of developing into a multi-purpose special economic zone, the premier underlined.

“In fact, the RGC completed the construction of a network of 37 roads and other infrastructures such as wastewater treatment plants and the development of public beaches, costing over USD 300 million, and were inaugurated in December 2021,” the premier added.

Samdech continued, “Cambodia is committed to maintaining her membership in the Club, and all four of Cambodia’s coastal provinces must maintain their belt and reputation as a club member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World. We are committed to making our coastal cities sustainable, as set out in the strategy to develop the tourism sector in coastal provinces, namely: Preah Sihanouk Province: as “Recreational Tourist Destination and a Multi-Purpose Economic Zone”, Kep Province: as “High-end and Luxurious Urban Tourist Destination”, Kampot Province: as “Cultural Heritage Urban Tourist Destination and Coastal Agro-Tourism”, and Koh Kong Province: as “World Class Eco-Tourism Destination”.

“Becoming a club member clearly reflects a new turning point for a better change in Cambodia’s coastal areas in terms of socio-economic, tourism, urbanization and environmental aspects, which are the determining factors for international recognition of Cambodia Bay. This work has enabled Cambodia’s coastal areas to play an important role in attracting investment to promote national economic growth, and be considered as an enticing and highly competitive tourist destination in Cambodia and in the region, after the cultural-historical heritage sites of Siem Reap-Angkor and Phnom Penh,” the premier underscored.
