Belgium (FN), Dec. 13 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said that his visit to Europe is not for trading independence and sovereignty for aid or favors, speaking in a meeting with nearly 2,000 Cambodians residing in Europe on 12 December 2022.

"I can not trade independence and sovereignty for aid or favors. If you want to offer assistance, you can. We do business together," the premier underscored.

On 12 August 2020, the European Union decided to impose a 20 percent tariff on Cambodian goods. It is estimated that the withdrawal of the preferential system costs Cambodia over USD 100 million.
