Sihanoukville (FN), Dec. 22 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said that those who defamed Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) must be sued, and that the lawsuit against the Candlelight Party's vice president Son Chhay is to eradicate the culture of defamation.

The premier spoke at the inauguration of a 43-kilometer road connecting Prey Nup District to Sihanoukville on Thursday morning.

Without the CPP's fight for justice, the party would be continuously defamed by the opposition, the premier added.

On 14 June 2022, the ruling CPP sued Son Chhay, 66, for public defamation. CPP sought legal action and demanded USD 1 million in compensation.

CPP lawyer Ky Tech highlighted some remarks of Son Chhay speaking on media outlets, which were considered fraudulent, misrepresented, information, fake and ill-intended purpose to seriously damage the reputation of the CPP who won the election.

“These election results do not reflect the will of the people who were intimidated. Their votes were bought and stolen," Chhay said in the interview with Cambodia Daily’s Idea Talk on 7 June 2022.
