Indonesia (FN), Jan. 10 – The ceremony for the transfer of office of the ASEAN secretary general for Cambodia’s Kao Kim Hourn was held on 9 January 2023 at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia at 3:10 p.m under the presidency of Indonesian foreign minister Retno Marsudi.

The event was attended by permanent representatives of the 10 ASEAN members and ambassadors of 97 non-ASEAN countries, 11 international media outlets, and six Jakarta-based ASEAN entities.

Kao Kim Hourn took off to Jakarta on 6 January 2023 after appointed as the ASEAN secretary general for five-year term, effective from 2023 onwards.

This is the first time that the kingdom has an opportunity to be the secretary general of ASEAN since her membership in 1999.

According to Article 11 of the ASEAN Charter, the ASEAN secretary general will be formally appointed by the ASEAN Summit for a five-year term and cannot be extended. This position shall be selected from among the ASEAN member states with taking into account integrity, competence, professional experience, and gender equality.
