Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 12 – The Investigating judge of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court (PPMC) issued an order on Thursday (Jan 12) to detain the accused Lay Samnang, deputy director of the department of finance and supply of Cambodia's Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans, and Youth Rehabilitation (MoSVY).

Fresh News quoted a court spokesperson as saying that the accused was allegedly charged with illegal exploitation and money laundering under Articles 597 and 598 of the Criminal Code, Article 32 of the Law on Anti-Corruption, and Article 38 of the Law on Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing.

On 11 January 2023, Samnang was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) for embezzling over USD 380,000 from the national budget.
