Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 16 –The Embassy of Indian in Phnom Penh celebrated the 77th Independence Day of the Republic of India, held on 15 August 2023 with exuberance at the Embassy premises in the morning and grand reception held in the evening at Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh.

Cambodian minister of commerce Pan Sorasak, Ieng Moly, Ly Thuch, Chhit Sokhon, senior officials from Cambodian Government, ambassadors of diplomatic missions, and many other distinguished guests, attended the ceremony.

The morning function commenced with the unfurling of the National Flag by Devyani Khobragade, ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and reading the president of India's address to the nation.

The reception was organized as part of Iconic Week celebrations of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), which began 75 weeks before the 75th anniversary of India's Independence Day and continued until 15 August 2023 to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of progressive India and glorious history of its people, culture and achievements. The Embassy organized a weeklong series of events celebrating culture, politics, health, and so on to honor and commemorate India's struggle for freedom of thought, resolution, and achievements.

Taking this occasion, Pan Sorasak wished the people of India the 77th National Independence Day and highlighted Cambodia-India cooperation.

In her speech, ambassador Devyani Khobragade conveyed wishes to Indians and the diaspora on the occasion of 77th Independence day and highlighted India's journey since 1947. She also pointed out the achievements of the past few years, which reflected the high level of bilateral relations between India and Cambodia.

"Trade relations, connectivity, cultural and people-to-people cooperation continue to be at the core of our priorities," ambassador underscored. Many business exchanges in various fields are ready to boost bilateral trade. The Bilateral Investment Treaty is nearing completion and will act as a catalyst for bringing more Indian investment in Cambodia.

She also expressed satisfaction with the progress in establishing direct flights that will boost trade and bring more Indians as tourists to the land of great natural beauty and civilized heritage. In addition, the Cambodian citizens will be brought to the land of the Buddha. Tourism will assist with integrating Unified Payments Interface (UPI) of India and Cambodia, which both sides have been working together.
