New York (FN), Sep. 23 – The secretary general of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres praised the Royal Government of Cambodia's development policy, especially the Pentagonal Strategy, which synergizes with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The secretary general of the UN paid a courtesy call on Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet on 22 September 2023 (New York time) at the United Nations headquarters, in New York.

Antonio Guterres underlined that each country, especially low-income countries, needs to develop a clear socioeconomic development policy framework that synergizes with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Regarding this policy, the secretary general praised Cambodia for formulating a socio-economic development strategy, the Pentagonal Strategy, that synergizes with the United Nations SDGs.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet informed the secretary general that in order to achieve the Cambodia Vision 2050, the Royal Government of Cambodia announced the implementation of the Pentagonal Strategy - Phase I, which is synergized with the SDGs.

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei underlined that Cambodia wants to achieve sustainable development with the United Nations and in the spirit of appreciating the full peace that Cambodia is achieving and with the efforts and support of the UN.

Lastly, Antonio Guterres reiterated that Cambodia should trust the UN system, which has always been highly committed to poverty reduction, the implementation of the rule of law, and respect for human rights. In this regard, the UN will continue to support and cooperate with Cambodia to achieve success in the path of setting SDGs for the benefit of Cambodian citizens.

Primary objectives of the Pentagonal Strategy-Phase I are to maintain the momentum of peace, economic growth, and development, while establishing the foundation to accelerate development of the country through building resilience in five priority sectors: public sector, economic sector, financial sector, human and social capital sector, and environmental sector and response to climate change. In addition, the Pentagonal Strategy-Phase I adopts five key priorities, namely People, Road, Water, Electricity, and Technology.
