Koh Kong (FN), Nov. 30 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet officially announced the decision to build a 35kV transmission line from the Stung Tatai Leu Dam to the people in Tatay Leu Commune, Chumnab Commune and Pralay Commune, Thmar Bang district, Koh Kong province, with a length of 33 kilometers.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Nov. 30) during a groundbreaking ceremony for a 150MW Stung Tatai Leu hydropower dam in Koh Kong province.

"Today, I am pleased to officially announce that the Royal Government, through Electricite du Cambodge (EDC), remains committed to extending electricity access to the residents of Ta Tai Leu, Chumnab, and Pralay communes. Our investment in this project exceeds USD 800,000,” the premier underlined.

Samdech Thipadei continued, “As per Electricite du Cambodge (EDC) reports, the Royal Government dispatched a study group to assess the project's impact on both people and the environment in 2015. However, during that period, certain environmental activists, including foreigners, incited the population to place distrust in the government. Despite some resistance from both the government and the people, in 2015, the project was halted and remains suspended to this day. Nevertheless, the challenge persists, with households still lacking electricity, relying on generators for power.”

Nevertheless, the Royal Government remains attentive to the electricity needs of the residents in Ta Tai Leu, Chumnab, and Pralay communes. Requests to electrify homes in these areas are under consideration. Preceding the election, the government initiated efforts, leading up to the construction of the Stung Tatai Leu Dam.

Expressing gratitude for the trust of the people, premier Hun Manet assured that the Royal Government and EDC are committed to minimizing the impact on people, the environment, and surrounding natural resources. Their aim is to enhance local development and provide greater benefits to the community.
