Koh Kong (FN), Nov. 30 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced the suspension of the development project for a 700-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Botum Sakor District, Koh Kong Province, speaking on Thursday morning (Nov. 30) during a groundbreaking ceremony for the 150MW Stung Tatai Leu hydropower dam in Koh Kong province.

"We already declared in November 2021 at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, United Kingdom, that Cambodia would halt the development of coal-fired power plants. Furthermore, on 2 November 2023, I decided to suspend the development project of a 700-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Botum Sakor District, Koh Kong Province. I also initiated discussions to explore the potential conversion of the coal-fired power plant into a low-carbon LNG project," the premier underscored.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also granted the Ministry of Mines and Energy the authority to explore the possibility of ceasing operations of the existing coal-fired power plants.
