Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 16 – On 14 December 2023, Japanese Minister and Deputy Chief of the Mission Taninai Ichitomo visited to view the Cambodia-Japan PKO training of heavy engineering equipment (HEE) at the Institute for Peacekeeping Forces, Mine and ERW Clearance (IMPEC) in Udong. Under Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ke Sovann, also participated in the viewing.

The training is carried out to develop Cambodian HEE instructors so that Cambodia will be able to develop HEE operators for successful PKO missions abroad.

Japan deployed its first ever PKO engineering units to Cambodia thirty-one years ago. Cambodia is now one of top contributors to UN PKO missions. Japan has supported the capacity building of Cambodia’s PKO units since 2013.

With the bilateral relations upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership this year, Japan intends to enhance its cooperation with Cambodia in addressing regional and international issues, particularly in the field of peacebuilding.
