Tokyo (FN), Dec. 19 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet intended to develop Sihanoukville autonomous port to become a regional logistics hub in the future, addressing Cambodia Investment Seminar 2023 on Tuesday (Dec. 19) in Tokyo, Japan.

“In fact, last year, Japan provided concessional loans for a new container terminal expansion project in Sihanoukville autonomous port. This year, after my return to Cambodia, on the 22nd, I and Japanese ambassador to Cambodia will inaugurate the first phase of expansions, which is part of the three phases of expansion, which will allow Sihanoukville autonomous port to be one of the regional ports,” the premier underlined.

Samdech Thipadei added that Japanese friends have been assisting Cambodia in all areas, including peace talks, peacekeeping operations, strengthening judicial and legal system, human resource and infrastructure developments. In terms of transportation and logistics infrastructure development, Japan has extended concessional loans for the development of international ports and transportation networks connecting Cambodia with neighbouring countries and major export hubs in the region which contributes to the time and cost saving association with shipping.

Samdech Thipadei continued, “Yesterday, during my meeting with Prime Minister Kishida, I have proposed the idea of having Japan to have developed this into not just a significant port, but the area to be a regional logistics hub in the future. Therefore, it will be a good landmark project between Cambodia and Japan for long-term, not just economic but long-term relationship also.”

On 1 May 2023, former Prime Minister of Cambodia Samdech Techo Hun Sen presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new container port at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. The construction of the new port, which will cost up to USD 1 billion, is to further expand the capacity of sea freight to meet Cambodia's economic and trade growth.
