Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 11 – Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet instructed the Ministry of Women's Affairs to continue to monitor the activities of some women, which undermines the cultural and moral values of Cambodian women.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Jan. 11) during the closing of 2023 annual meeting of the Ministry at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel.

Samdech Thipadei highlighted instances where individuals were reported and apprehended for creating disturbing videos. The premier added that the rights of citizens and women's rights are upheld, but we also have an obligation to preserve and protect social, cultural and traditional values, especially the values of Cambodian women.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also reiterated that amidst our country's future development, preserving our identity is paramount. While globalization, standardized materials and education, and market value uniformity may converge, the adoption of free market policies and democratic principles must be guided by a steadfast commitment to respecting core values. In Cambodia, the protection of individual rights and freedoms, particularly for women, is essential but should be exercised within defined boundaries to safeguard the identity of Cambodian women.

Samdech added, "I would like to encourage the Ministry of Women's Affairs to continue to offer guidance. I have seen the ministry’s important role in launching Neary Rattanak-Phase 5 (Neary Rattanak V) and the sixth phase, which focuses on education and training, and cooperating with partners in all fields.”

Neary Rattanak V (2019-2023) focuses on promoting gender mainstreaming in policies, strategic plans, and development programs across all sector and at all levels, especially in key strategic areas related to the economy, education, health, legal protection, governance and climate change.

Neary Rattanak V is formulated in parallel with the process of formulating the draft National Policy on Gender Equality. Ultimately, it is envisioned that NRV plays a strong role in the implementation of the national policy, by way of acting as a catalyst and lead coordinating framework for line-ministries and stakeholders and promoting commitment and accountability across all sectors and at all levels.
