Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 23 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that the establishment of press laws is not intended to curb press freedom. Instead, it aims to protect the rights of journalists, address violations of the law, and safeguard their values.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Jan. 23) during the closing of annual meeting of the Ministry of Information at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel

On this occasion, Samdech Thipadei urged the Ministry of Information to collaborate with other ministries and institutions to formulate a code of conduct and ethical guidelines for journalism. This press charter will serve as a framework for national media and journalists to respect and adhere to.

"The implementation of press-related laws is not to restrict journalists' rights but to safeguard those who operate within the boundaries of the law and uphold their values," the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei added that through press laws, citizens will gain a better understanding of journalists' rights and roles.

The Royal Government, Samdech Thipadei underlined, does not view journalists as enemies but as essential partners. In a democratic country like Cambodia, enforcing laws is crucial to prevent actions that infringe upon the rights of others.
