Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 24 – Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet issued an order to the Army Command that peace must be maintained at all costs, speaking on Wednesday (Jan. 24) at the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Cambodian Royal Army Command Headquarters.

The premier added that the army has made significant contributions to maintaining peace, building the nation and responding to disasters.

Samdech Thipadei underlined the imperative of scrutinizing, acknowledging, and commemorating the pivotal elements fostering internal unity within the military and the success of the win-win political approach, which has been instrumental in maintaining Cambodia's unity to date. He also expressed gratitude to the officers for navigating through this challenging phase.

Samdech Thipadei continued, the Cambodian army enjoys a commendable reputation and honour. During his recent visit to France, additional requests were made for Cambodia to consider deploying troops to contribute to peacekeeping efforts in other nations. Nevertheless, it is crucial to note that Article 53 of the Cambodian Constitution explicitly prohibits the stationing of the Cambodian army abroad unless done so under the auspices of the United Nations (UN).

"We remain committed to collaborating with the UN mechanism in our ongoing participation in peacekeeping missions in various countries. Recognizing the adversities of war and understanding the suffering of our people due to conflicts, we are steadfast in our dedication to this cause. Over the past 25 years, the army has undergone substantial reforms, evolving into a unified force that integrates effectively, upholds solidarity, and embodies a robust national spirit. Our continuous efforts aim to fortify the army's capabilities, ensuring its ability to defend our nation, safeguard territory, and protect the peace and the citizens,” the premier underscored.

"In the current and forthcoming phases of nation-building and the 2023 reform agenda, the Royal Government of the seventh mandate must also set out a number of policies that bolster existing accomplishments and propel the nation towards progress. Recognizing that the active involvement of diverse armed forces is pivotal to development, the armed forces stand as the cornerstone of this advancement. It is imperative that peace be safeguarded at all costs,” Samdech Thipadei added.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined that the fundamental pillars for development and national unity lie in peace, security, and social stability. Undeniably, without peace, there can be no development and unity of the army and the nation.

The premier also highlighted that the new government has initiated substantial reforms to enhance the capabilities of the army. He underscored the importance of ensuring that the modernization efforts do not compromise the essential values of national defence, loyalty to the nation and its people, commitment to national defence, religion, and the king, as well as peacekeeping endeavours. Despite the ongoing reforms, it is imperative to preserve the spirit of upholding national prestige.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet further directed the Army Command to persist in the reform process, reinforcing the structure, capabilities, and equipment.
