Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 24 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the army is a vital force and has consistently played a crucial role at all stages of the nation's historical events, including coups d'état and national liberation. The army has been instrumental in extinguishing the flames of war and working towards peace for the nation and its people.
The premier spoke on Wednesday (Jan. 24) at the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Cambodian Royal Army Command Headquarters.
Samdech Thipadei underlined, "The army holds significant influence in both initiating and concluding conflicts. The coup in the 1970s, initiated by the military, led to war, strife, and territorial division. However, by 1998, the successful implementation involved the participation of all armed forces, particularly the former Khmer Rouge army. Without the involvement of the army, the participation of political leaders from the former Khmer Rouge would not have been successful."
Many nations globally have experienced the ravages of war due to military coups and rebellious armies disregarding political leaders. Samdech Techo Hun Sen's Win-win Policy, with the active involvement of key operators within the core army, was a successful operation in Cambodia's political history.
Transforming separate forces into a unified entity, the Cambodian Royal Army was pivotal in the successful execution of the 1998 political victory. Samdech Thipadei expressed gratitude to all officers who have served the Royal Government at various stages.
On that occasion, the premier also highlighted that the new government has initiated substantial reforms to enhance the capabilities of the army. He underscored the importance of ensuring that the modernization efforts do not compromise the essential values of national defence, loyalty to the nation and its people, commitment to national defence, religion, and the king, as well as peacekeeping endeavours. Despite the ongoing reforms, it is imperative to preserve the spirit of upholding national prestige.
