Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 18 – President of the Pheu Thai Party Paetongtarn Shinawatra spoke about the longstanding and robust relations between the Pheu Thai Party and the Cambodian People's Party, which have existed for a long time and are determined to nurture and sustain this positive relationship for the long term.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra paid a courtesy call on the Acting President of the Cambodian National Assembly Cheam Yeap, on Monday (Mar. 18) at the National Assembly.

On that occasion, Paetongtarn Shinawatra provided an overview of the governance process in Thailand's current administration. She added that the collaborative efforts within the coalition government aimed at restoring peace, which had been disrupted previously. She underscored that when the country is at peace, the primary focus shifts to economic growth. She expressed confidence that the continuation of peace between Thailand and Cambodia would further stimulate economic development in both nations.

She also expressed support for Cheam Yeap's mention of enhancing the tourism corridor between the two countries, particularly through the promotion of bilateral mechanisms.

On behalf of National Assembly President Khuon Sudary, Cheam Yeap extended a warm welcome to Paetongtarn Shinawatra and the Thai delegation during their official visit to Cambodia. He expressed gratitude for their presence at the National Assembly.

Cheam Yeap stated that the current meeting aims to strengthen the relationship between the Cambodian People's Party and the Pheu Thai Party, fostering greater unity and cooperation among members of the parliament of the parties. This collaboration is crucial for safeguarding and promoting the interests of both nations' citizens.

He noted the ongoing parliamentary exchanges between the two countries, both bilaterally and within multilateral frameworks. Specifically, he mentioned the upcoming state visit of President of the Parliament of Thailand Wan Muhamad Noor Matha to Cambodia on 21-23 March 2024, as a significant event reinforcing these relations.

At the same time, both parliaments are keen on advancing the Young and Women Parliamentary Mechanism within the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), particularly in jointly fostering and endorsing digital parliamentary initiatives. This includes the establishment of the "AIPA Digital Law Library" to benefit the citizens of each ASEAN member state.

Cheam Yeap expressed full support for the reciprocal visits between the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand, which have elevated bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, reflecting the evolution of diversity in bilateral ties and ongoing mutual development in this new era.

Acting President of the Cambodian National Assembly commended the cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand in bilateral, regional, and international spheres, notably in trade and tourism, which has witnessed significant growth in recent years. He underlined the importance of facilitating the tourism corridor between the two countries, particularly by promoting the two-state mechanism, with the aim of doubling tourism momentum for mutual benefit.

Regarding inter-party relations, Cheam Yeap expressed gratitude for the strong cooperation between the Cambodian People's Party and the Pheu Thai Party across various forums, particularly within the framework of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP). He announced that in 2024, the Cambodian Parliament will host the 11th Plenary Session of the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (IPTP) and the Cambodian People's Party will host the 12th General Assembly of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP). He expressed hope for the Thai Parliament and the Pheu Thai Party's support and participation.
