Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 26 – Cambodian President of the Senate, Samdech Techo Hun Sen publicly sought the support of all Cambodians to form a strong national movement aimed at realising the Funan Techo Canal Project, despite opposition from some countries.

Samdech Techo spoke on Friday (Apr. 26) during his gala dinner with Cambodian Oknha Association at Garden City Hotel Phnom Penh.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen underlined he must absolutely protect and ensure the realisation of this canal because he was the decision maker during his tenure as Prime Minister in the sixth-mandate.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen underscored, “I must assert that I will not allow anyone to jeopardise the security of my country for their own gain, regardless of their identity or country of origin. I am fully committed to defending Cambodia's sovereignty.”

“It's essential to understand and prioritise Cambodia's interests, but what's even more critical is the support and understanding of the Cambodian people in making the Funan Techo canal project a national endeavour."

Samdech Techo Hun Sen explained that the Funan Techo canal provides direct access to the sea without the need to pass through other countries. The project extends beyond the southwest and covers the entire country. Agricultural products from the provinces will be transported through this canal.

In addition to facilitating transportation, the Funan Techo canal will also serve as a source of water supply in the southwestern provinces. Furthermore, it will help alleviate floods in the southwestern provinces.

Please be informed The Funan Techo canal is 180 km long from Prek Takeo of the Mekong River, through the Prek Ta Ek of the Bassac River, then into Prek Ta Hing of the Bassac River, Koh Thom district, and extends to the Kep province passes through four provinces, including Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep, with a total population of 1.6 million people living on both side of the waterway. The construction of the new waterway project is estimated to cost USD 1.7 billion and take about four years to complete.
