Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 26 – Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen stated that the Funan Techo canal project will enable certain Cambodian goods to bypass Viet Nam and without incurring additional fees.

Samdech Techo spoke on Friday (Apr. 26) during his gala dinner with Cambodian Oknha Association at Garden City Hotel Phnom Penh.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen stated that the Funan Techo canal provides direct access to the sea without the need to pass through other countries. The canal project is not only expanding in the southwest but throughout the entire country. This development means that agricultural products from the provinces can be transported by canal directly to the sea.

Furthermore, Samdech Techo Hun Sen added that the waterway transportation system will attract investors to invest in Cambodia. Additionally, the convenience of transportation will encourage existing investors in Cambodia to increase their investments.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen underscored, "We no longer need to pay the extra fees that we have been paying to Viet Nam. In the past, we were compelled to use Viet Nam's ports for any goods requiring international transit, but this incurred costs. They only provide assistance when it suits them, not when it's convenient for us. This issue has a historical context dating back to the time of late King Father Norodom Sihanouk. He attempted to construct a port in Sihanoukville, which faced significant challenges and disagreements, leaving Cambodia in a difficult situation."

Samdech Techo Hun Sen added that the construction of the Funan Techo canal will position Cambodia as a landmark in water transport.
