Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 20 – Sam Vathana, a prominent activist from the dissolved Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) who received asylum in California, the United States, announced his defection from the party and requested to join the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) under the leadership of Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

In a letter seen by Fresh News on 19 June 2024, Sam Vathana wrote, "After more than 20 years of political life and over the past 59 years, I have clearly seen that only the CPP offers a clear policy, robust political force, and a long-term vision capable of ensuring political stability and national peace. This foundation is essential for Cambodia's ongoing social development and economic prosperity."

He continued, "The turning moment that led me to join the CPP and fully support the Royal Government of Cambodia is my growing dissatisfaction with the opposition leaders. Their actions and decisions have prompted me to make this change."

Please note that Sam Vathana manages a tutoring centre in Stockton, California, and, along with his wife, owns a Cambodian restaurant called "Bayon" in Stockton, USA.
