JAKARTA, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Fourteen people sustained injuries and scores of houses were damaged in West Sumatra Province after a 6.5-magnitude quake hit western Indonesia earlier Thursday, an official at the local disaster agency said.
The damages and injuries occurred in Persisir Selatan District, said Zulfiatno, head of the provincial disaster agency.
"The 14 persons have been rushed to a hospital, some of them suffering from serious injuries," he told Xinhua by phone from the province.
"One school building and some houses collapsed, but the precise number is being calculated as our staff are assessing the impact of the quake," he added.
A shallow quake of 6.5 magnitude jolted West Sumatra Province earlier Thursday but there was no tsunami threat, an official at the Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency told Xinhua by phone.
The quake struck at 05:56 a.m. Jakarta time Thursday (2256 GMT Wednesday) with the epicenter at 79 km southwest Pesisir Selatan of the province and the depth at 72 km under the sea bed, he said.
The shakes of the quake were also felt in nearby Bengkulu province, the official said.
Over 1,000 people were killed when a 7.6-magnitude quake hit West Sumatra Province in 2009.
Indonesia lies on a quake-prone zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
