Phnom Penh (FN), April 18 - There was an uptick in traffic accidents and fatalities during the Khmer New Year Festival, which spanned from April 13-17.

Over that period, 54 people died and 226 were in injured as a result from traffic accidents around the country.

The numbers come in accordance to the official report of Department of Traffic Police and Public Order.

There were 121 accidents, resulting damages in 144 motorcycles, 44 compact cars, 8 large cars, and 5 other vehicles.

Speeding, Driving Under Influence (DUI), illegal passing, driving on the wrong side, denying traffic order, vehicle breakdowns, and falling asleep at the wheel were listed as the causes of the accidents.

In Battambang, there were 12 accidents resulting in 12 deaths and 17 injuries.

In Kampong Thom, 9 accidents resulting in 7 deaths and 26 injuries occurred.

A total of 7 accidents resulting in 5 deaths and 10 injuries took place in Phnom Penh.

In Svay Rieng, 10 accidents resulting in 4 deaths and 23 injuries.

In Kratie, there were 10 accidents with 3 deaths and 13 injuries.

In Preah Vihear, 7 accidents with 3 deaths and 10 injuries.

In Prey Veng, 3 accidents with 3 deaths and 3 injuries.

In Preah Sihanouk, 3 accidents with 3 deaths took place.
