Phnom Penh (FN), Jul. 13 – Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen met with To Lam, President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, on 12 July 2024, at the Senate.

During the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen welcomed To Lam's state visit to Cambodia and congratulated him on his appointment as President of Viet Nam.

Samdech Techo noted the strong and close Cambodia-Viet Nam relations, which are based on the spirit of "Good Neighborliness, Traditional Friendship, Comprehensive Cooperation, and Long-term Stability."

The President of Viet Nam expressed his pleasure in meeting Samdech Techo, who had visited Cambodia as Minister of Public Security in January.

On this occasion, To Lam also conveyed regards from the General Secretary of the Party, the Prime Minister, and the President of the National Assembly of Viet Nam. He wished Samdech Techo a happy birthday and thanked the delegation for their warm hospitality. He also congratulated the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) on their recent electoral success and Samdech Techo on his appointment as President of the Senate.

To Lam praised Cambodia's rapid and progressive development under the leadership of the CPP, Samdech Techo, and the current Royal Government led by Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet. He expressed confidence that Cambodia will achieve its goal of attaining high-middle-income status by 2030 and becoming a high-income country by 2050.

The president added that Viet Nam and Cambodia are good neighbors with historical ties against common enemies and that Viet Nam maintains a steadfast policy of friendship, trust, and cooperation in all fields. He also highlighted the importance of existing bilateral mechanisms and cooperation between the two countries at all levels, especially in promoting people-to-people exchanges.

Additionally, he expressed his hopes that Samdech Techo and his spouse would be able to pay an official visit to Viet Nam at an appropriate time in the future.

For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked the Secretary-General of the Party, the Prime Minister, and the President of the National Assembly for their birthday wishes.

Samdech Techo agreed with the President's remarks on the relationship between the two countries and said that under the long-term vision of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, Viet Nam will achieve the goal of industrialization and modernization by 2030, similar to Cambodia’s goal of becoming a high-middle-income country. He envisioned Viet Nam reaching the G20 as a developed country, providing positive outcomes for neighboring countries such as Cambodia and Laos.

Samdech Techo added that, given the changing global situation, it is crucial to work together, especially in continuing cooperation between the three neighboring countries: Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam, to promote good neighborliness.

The President of the Senate stated that Cambodia does not forget Viet Nam's assistance in overthrowing the Pol Pot regime. Last month, both sides celebrated the 47th anniversary of his escape to Viet Nam in the X16 area. He also recalled Cambodia's assistance in helping to unify Viet Nam.

Lastly, Samdech Techo accepted the invitation to visit Viet Nam in the near future and wished the Vietnamese president and his delegation success in their visit.
