Phnom Penh (FN), September 27 - Over the first eight months of 2017, Cambodia exported almost 100,000 tons of dry rubber, an increase of nearly 34%, amounted up to $166 million, compared to the same period in 2016, according to the official report of the General Department of Rubber, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Tuesday.

In 2016, only 140,000 tons of rubber were exported, profiting $180 million.

The General Director of Rubber reported that the rubber market has been holding steady for the past eight months, and that even though the price of rubber is at an average of $1,700 per ton, rubber growers could continue to sustain their costs and earn some profits.

He added that the government has encouraged rubber planters to continue to farm plantations in order to meet policy goals.

Cambodia exports rubber to China, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia. By the end of 2016, Cambodian rubber plantations covered 431,332 hectares of land.
