Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 26 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted that the shooting case involving former tycoon Srey Sina is the first in the country to result in compensation exceeding USD 2 million.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Dec. 26) during a graduation of more than 1,000 students of the University of Human Resources, held at the National Institute of Education.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court sentenced Srey Sina to 31 years in prison for three separate charges and ordered a total compensation of USD 2 million for the deceased victims and USD 500,000 for those injured.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet stated that "This time, it involves serving a 31-year prison sentence and paying USD 2.5 million in compensation. For the first time, individual compensation for each victim and their family has reached USD 1 million."

While expressing deep regret over the loss of life caused by the conflict, the premier underlined that no amount of money can replace a human life. However, he commended the trial for demonstrating accountability and strict enforcement of the law, underscoring that even those with the title of "tycoon" are not above the law.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed hope that this case would serve as a powerful message to deter similar crimes and provide justice for society. He also called for a review and amendment of laws to introduce harsher punishments for gang-related crimes.

It should be noted that this tragic shooting occurred on the afternoon of 17 June 2024 in Borey Peng Huoth Boeung Snor, Niroth commune, Chbar Ampov district. The incident claimed the lives of an engaged couple and left two others injured.
