Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 27 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that support for Cambodian Muslims and followers of other religions extends from the top leaders, who practice Buddhism, to the grassroots level.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Feb. 27) at the opening ceremony of the Islamic Summit under the theme “Islam and Buddhism” at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel.
Samdech Thipadei stated that Cambodian kings throughout history have consistently provided support to the Cham community, who sought refuge in Cambodia due to war. He noted that the Cham people were also allowed to participate in the defence of Cambodian territory during the French colonial era.
The prime minister further explained that during the French colonial period, the Cham minority was given the designation “Khmer Islam” following Cambodia’s independence from France in 1953.
Samdech Thipadei continued by highlighting that, under the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk’s vision, the Cham minority aspired to become Cambodian citizens, legally practice Islam, and integrate into Khmer society while preserving their cultural identity.
On the occasion, the premier also noted that, following the country’s liberation on 7 January 1979, freedom of religion in Cambodia was restored and revitalised.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet continued that under the previous leadership of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Cambodia’s Muslim community has flourished and enjoys full religious freedom. The Royal Government has re-established the Supreme Islamic Institution, the Supreme Council of the Islamic Faith of Cambodia, and has appointed numerous Khmer Muslim leaders to senior positions in national and sub-national institutions.
Samdech Thipadei added that the Royal Government has also supported the Khmer Muslim community by organising the annual Ramadan Iftar meal since 2014, an event that has attracted an average of 5,000 national and international guests each year.
