Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 14 – Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen noted that Thailand is currently exporting its labour force to South Korea while sourcing workers from Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar to address its domestic labour shortages.
Samdech Techo spoke on Friday (Mar. 14) during a solidarity dinner with the Cambodian Oknha Association at Premier Centre Sen Sok in Phnom Penh.
“I recently heard a woman say, ‘We must work harder to make our country free from migration as it is now.’ This is a gross exaggeration. Even Thailand is exporting its labour force to South Korea,” the Senate president underscored.
According to Samdech Techo, Thailand sends workers to high-wage countries such as South Korea, as well as to the Arab world and the Middle East. At the same time, Thailand is filling its labour gap by recruiting workers from Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.
On the occasion, Samdech Techo also urged Cambodians working abroad, particularly in Thailand, to explore job opportunities in their home country when visiting their families. While working overseas may offer higher wages, he noted that the cost of living is also significantly higher, and being far from home comes with its own challenges.
