Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 12 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that the People’s Republic of China is an important and indispensable partner in Cambodia’s development, contributing significantly to both economic and social progress across the country.
The premier spoke on Saturday (Apr. 12) during the inauguration of National Road 71C connecting Tbong Khmum-Kampong Cham.
Samdech Thipadei underlined that China is widely recognised as a top-tier partner nation, providing extensive concessional loans and grant aid to support the development of Cambodia’s road and bridge infrastructure.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, “The People’s Republic of China is a vital and irreplaceable friend to Cambodia, playing a key role in driving the country’s economic and social advancement. China has consistently offered concessional and grant-based financing, greatly contributing to the growth of our road and bridge networks.”
To date, China has contributed more than USD 3 billion to improve the kingdom’s road quality and strengthen transportation connectivity both nationally and regionally.
One notable example is National Road 71C, which was constructed through a concessional loan from the Chinese government worth approximately USD 133 million, along with additional counterpart funding from the Royal Government of Cambodia.
National Road 71C plays a crucial role in connecting the western and eastern sides of the Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge (Stung Trang–Kroch Chhmar), facilitating travel and the transportation of agricultural products. Specifically, it links communities in Chamkar Leu District, Stung Trang District, Kroch Chhmar District, and Tbong Khmum District to other areas in Kampong Cham and Tbong Khmum provinces, as well as the rest of the country.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet also noted that the year 2025 marks the 67th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and China, which began on 19 July 1958. Over the decades, bilateral ties have continued to grow stronger, culminating in the establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership in December 2010.
On behalf of the Royal Government and the people of Cambodia, the premier expressed heartfelt thanks to the Chinese government and people for their consistent support of Cambodia’s development.
Samdech Thipadei added that the relationship between Cambodia and China remains steadfast. The many achievements including the construction of roads and bridges and the visit of the Chinese President Xi Jinping are clear indicators of the strength of this friendship. Cambodia and China continue to be close partners that respect each other’s rights and national sovereignty.
