Tboung Khmum (FN), Apr. 12 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet underscored that in light of the ongoing trade war between China and the United States, the Royal Government of Cambodia will continue to pursue negotiated solutions to safeguard the interests of the nation and its people.

The premier spoke on Saturday (Apr. 12) during the inauguration of National Road 71C connecting Tbong Khmum-Kampong Cham.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, “The economic situation is challenging. You’ve all been following the trade war. But regardless of the circumstances, the government cannot run away from it, ignore it, or avoid facing it. We must confront it and find swift and effective solutions to protect the national interest.”

The trade conflict between China and the United States has escalated following President Donald Trump’s introduction of reciprocal tariffs on various countries, particularly China. Within a week, the United States raised tariffs on Chinese imports by up to 145 per cent. In response, on 11 April, the Chinese government announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 125 per cent on US goods.

The US has justified these reciprocal tariffs by citing persistent trade imbalances, noting the higher volume of goods imported into the US compared to its exports. However, analysts have warned that this escalation could have serious implications for the global economy.

Regarding Cambodia, the US announced a reciprocal tariff of up to 49 per cent. In response, the Royal Government of Cambodia has established a dedicated working group to engage in negotiations with US counterparts.

Prime Minister Hun Manet further stated, “Issuing a formal request for negotiations, preparing for economic diversification, and strengthening human resources and grassroots economic development are the government’s responsibilities. These efforts are aimed at ensuring economic growth that benefits all citizens.”
