(Phnom Penh): French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed France’s readiness to help facilitate the provision of relevant documents to both Cambodian and Thai parties, should the need arise, in order to assist in resolving their border dispute. This assurance was made during his bilateral meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Nice, France.
Cambodian Delegate Minister Jean François Tan spoke on Thursday (Jun. 12) in a press conference on the outcomes of Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet’s participation in the Third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France.
The delegate minister said that during meetings with leaders of friendly and partner nations — particularly the French President — Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed Cambodia’s position on resolving border issues with Thailand. This same position was also recently conveyed to the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Minister Jean-François Tan further clarified, “At the very least, with the French president, it is true that the prime minister raised the current issues between Cambodia and Thailand. However, I must emphasise that the prime minister addressed the matter solely to state Cambodia’s position—nothing more was intended.”
Cambodia’s four-point stance on resolving the border dispute with Thailand, as previously outlined by Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, includes:
First, Cambodia remains firmly committed to peace, friendship, and good cooperation with Thailand.
Second, Cambodia’s decision to bring the issue of Preah Vihear Temple, Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, and Ta Krabei Temple, and the Emerald Triangle area before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is to seek a peaceful, permanent resolution to the border problem in those regions — rather than leaving the dispute unresolved for a prolonged period, which could reignite armed conflict.
Third, continued cooperation with Thailand to expedite border demarcation and the placement of boundary markers in the remaining areas (excluding the four mentioned zones), utilizing the existing Cambodia-Thailand Joint Border Commission (JBC) mechanism.
Fourth, maintain bilateral relations through all existing mechanisms for the benefit of the peoples of both countries.
Jean-François Tain added, “I can confirm that President Macron expressed France’s willingness to support the process by providing relevant documents to both Cambodia and Thailand as needed.”
It should be noted that Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet participated in the Third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France, from 9-11 June 2025.
